Tokyo-based artist Satomimagae weaves subtle songs for guitar, voice and noise, propagating variant folk strains that flicker between organic and mechanistic, personal and environmental, warm and cool. Satomi’s latest offering, Hanazono, is a work of both simplicity and intricacy, a veritable biosphere of unfiltered artistry.

Tiziano Popoli is an Italian composer known for his “unusual musical meshing of minimalism and instrumental pop.” Burn the Night / Bruciare la Notte: Original Recordings, 1983–1989 collects scores, soundtracks and commissions that blossomed out of the artist’s independent explorations and collaborations in and around Bologna, Italy.

Rimarimba is the brainchild of Robert Cox, a British self-taught classical guitarist. His music is built on synth loops, interesting electronic sonorities, melodic counterpoint and humor.

Nuke Watch is an amorphous entity emanating out of Bog 65, Beat Detective’s former headquarters. Its 2020 album Countdown is a “rippling, multi-sensory experience that warms, beguiles, puzzles, tickles and eases the listener,” developed in the improvisational and exploratory aura of the studio.

Oliver Coates is a British cellist, composer and producer who has played with Thom Yorke and appeared on scores for Paul Thomas Anderson. His 2020 album skins n slime sees him leading “an impassioned performance of strings through viscous, synthetic modulation.”

Michele Mercure is an electronic artist who has made music for film, television, dance and theater. Her “arresting dream-music” demonstrates a “transportive attitude within and beyond the limited sound recording medium.”

Multi-instrumentalist producer Ka Baird is known for an experimental sound matched by raw, evocative live performances. Hungry Shells brings together Baird and the late pioneering composer Pekka Airaksinen for a merging of musical voices to create startling, surreal landscapes.

Flore Laurentienne is the vessel of Quebec-based composer, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Mathieu David Gagnon. The classically trained musician incorporates elements of post-minimalism, early progressive rock, and the compositional art of fugue into his work.

Dylan Moon is a Los Angeles musician who debuted in 2019 with Only the Blues. His second full-length, Option Explore, is a collection of clever, colorful songs filtered through frequencies, timbres, and dreams discovered and discarded while its maker shifts from one sub-genre to the next.

Horse Lords is Owen Gardner, Andrew Bernstein, Max Eilbacher, and Sam Haberman, an instrumental quartet formed in 2010. Its music is defined by repetition and complexity, “humanized with exploration and passion.”
