Shifting her focus to Los Angeles’ metal scene and the clubs and bands that supported it, The Metal Years features interviews with stars like Ozzy, Lemmy and Megadeth, while also turning its eye to a number of aspiring club bands like London, many of whose members would go on to play in acts like Mötley Crue and Guns ‘n’ Roses.
Decline of Western Civilization III, the final entry in Spheeris’ influential documentary series, follows the lives of the homeless teenagers that made up the Los Angeles gutter punk scene. The film’s harrowing depiction of poverty among teenagers and the relationships she formed during its production moved the director to become a foster parent.
